"So take heed to your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously." Malachi 2:16

They said to Him, "Why then did Moses command to GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE AND SEND her AWAY?" Jesus said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to divorce your wives; but from the beginning it has not been this way. And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery."

While you can rightfully claim that some divorces are not sinful, it is simply unbiblical to assert that NO divorce is sinful, as you have here. And God hates every one of them, even if he allows them. Moreover, I know of no commenter in the Christian Church who has ever claimed that divorce is not a problem for the church. In fact, I would argue it is the number one social problem within the Church today. Frankly, it is a cancer eating away at the very foundation of human relationship established by God and used by figuratively by God to describe both His relationship with his people and Christ's relationship with the Church.

To put it in terms that any Christian should understand, divorce is a huge redwood tree in the eye of the church. Why we ignore that in order to spend tremendous amounts of time, energy, wailing and gnashing of teeth on the speck of gay marriage in society's eye is beyond my understanding. When we clean up our own house, maybe then we will have some legitimacy in the eyes of the world to address the ills outside our own walls.gengwallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14777011310672675137noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4681544228356138697.post-32196423527725406562013-02-17T19:55:08.081-08:002013-02-17T19:55:08.081-08:00Well Divorce is nit sinful for go made a law in De...Well Divorce is nit sinful for go made a law in Deut.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4681544228356138697.post-47227025495611909712012-12-22T14:09:29.643-08:002012-12-22T14:09:29.643-08:00This is an amazing post. It is hard for me as a woman, especially when beauty is determined by societies standards. America has a standard, which is unrealistic for a lot.

It is so embedded in most psyche, that Im doubtful we will ever get away from it. At oral argument, even the state's lawyers conceded that if this were a tax, it would be constitutional. From a theoretical standpoint, this decision does nothing to advance a leftist agenda.

So why haven't we seen such a tax ever before? Simply because, from a practical standpoint, it would be impossible to pass. Virtually everyone who commented on the law during its passage and during the two years this has worked its way through the courts agrees that the law would have never made it through congress if the "shared responsibility payment" were a tax. Democrat leaders certainly knew this which is why they went to great lengths to sell this as a penalty and, in fact, blatantly denied it was a tax (a lie, it turns out).

So I am not too worried about car, broccoli, or Koran (which would have 1st amendment issues as well) taxes in the future.gengwallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14777011310672675137noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4681544228356138697.post-75537578326410965372012-06-28T19:52:47.512-07:002012-06-28T19:52:47.512-07:00Your article makes no sense whatsoever. Thanks to Roberts and his Harvard Leftist agenda, the U.S. Government can tax and penalize Americans for NOT buying something that the Government mandates must be bought. Thus, the U.S. Government can now force EVERY American to buy a copy of the Koran and if any American refuses, the Government may impose a TAX on that individual. If the American refuses to pay the Koran Tax, the U.S Government can PEANALIZE that American. And if that American still refuses to pay Koran Tax and Penalties imposed, the U.S. Government can seize that American's property and liquidate it to extract the Koran Tax. Are you getting it yet? This marks the beginning of the end of American. Here is how I would rate it.

General - All human references retain their grammatical number as reflected in the original text. Fail
Verse 11 (and 12) - hesychia translated to suggest peace or tranquility rather than verbal silence. Pass +10
Verse 12 - Paul’s authority (“I do not allow”, etc.) is clear. Pass +10
Verse 12 - Negative word such as dominion or dominate is used AND it is not suggested that such dominion is taken away or usurped from men. Pass +10
Verse 14 - Translation reflects correct tense. Fail
Verse 15 - “childbearing” is translated as a noun with the definite article AND salvation (rather than bodily safety) is emphasized. Fail

No individual bonuses or reductions

Total 30pts.

Specifically
"They must be allowed to study undisturbed" - "undisturbed" is perhaps the best word I have seen to accurately reflect the meaning of hēsychia, but beginning with "they" changes the number and implies that this is a continuation of vss. 9-10, something that is not supported by the text.

"I’m not saying that women should teach men, or try to dictate to them" - this is a little confusing in that it changes "I do not allow" to "I'm not saying". But it isn't horrible. "dictate" is a good word choice for authenteō - much better than most.

The translation of 14 and 15 is typical. "fell into trespass" is the incorrect tense for the verb. It should be "has fallen". The perfect tense of the "to be" verb indicates consequences that are still ongoing so an English past tense with completed consequences is not only wrong but misleading.

"kept safe through the process of childbirth". This is a common but very flawed translation of the text. First of all, it is a nonsequitur. What does the medical condition of a mother in labor have to do with anything in the passage? Beyond that there are a number of grammatical errors.

First, concerning the Greek word translated "kept safe". While that is a legitimate definition it can also mean biblical salvation. Given the context both immediate (a woman has fallen into trespass) and throughout Chapters 1 and 2 of the book (false teaching and God's desire that all should be saved), a translation of "saved" is far more appropriate. There simply is no injury or other imminent danger present in the text to support a translation indicating physical safety is necessary. Which leads to: "through the process of childbirth". There simply is no verb here to indicate some process or other action. "childbirth" in the text is a noun and is proceeded by the definite article. The only legitimate translation is "the childbirth".

Overall, the translation is fairly good through verse 13 but then falls completely apart. I'm interested in your take on it. Do verses 14 and 15 as translated make sense to you? Especially as a continuation of verses 11-13 (or 9-13 as the translator implies)? To me, verse 15 in particular seems completely out of place and nonsensical as translated.gengwallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14777011310672675137noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4681544228356138697.post-36308183265387318352012-02-23T07:22:02.351-08:002012-02-23T07:22:02.351-08:00This is very interesting. NT Wright wrote on how he would personally translate it:

11They must be allowed to study undisturbed, in full submission to God. 12I’m not saying that women should teach men, or try to dictate to them; they should be left undisturbed. 13Adam was created first, you see, and then Eve; 14and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived, and fell into trespass. 15She will, however, be kept safe through the process of childbirth, if she continues in faith, love and holiness with prudence.

If it is not too much effort, how would you rate that?Rethahttp://biblicalpersonhood.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4681544228356138697.post-20368680061445305502011-08-12T10:56:28.034-07:002011-08-12T10:56:28.034-07:0011th Circuit upholds Vinson. As far as Eve's "position" - an interesting choice of words - I don't believe God's view of or desire for the marriage relationship changes at all. Gen 3:16 is not a directive. It is God's prophecy on the effects that sin in the world will have on marriage given our new "nature". The effects predicted in Genesis 3:16 don't universally obliterate the kind of relationship that Gen 2:18 speaks of. Husbands and Wives can still lives as corresponding companions.
